Dracula

Bram Stokers ‘Dracula’ is set in Transylvania, Romania, an area with a folklore tradition of vampires.

Dracula was loosely - very loosely - based upon a real life character Vlad Dracula (1431-76), known as Vlad the Impaler for his habit of executing his enemies by impaling them on stakes.

Although Dracula literally means the Devil (‘Dracu’ in Romanian), Romanians regard Vlad Dracula as a national hero uniting much of modern Romania and resisting the threat of Turkish domination.

The invention of the printing press meant that stories of his cruelty were spread at an unprecedented speed.

A Dracula tour combines real history, legend, folklore, some of the most outstanding mountain areas of Europe and one of the great novels of the English language.

Dracula tours are available with expert guides.

It is said that Vlad Dracula besieged and captured Bran Castle, which perfectly fits the spooky Hollywood image! However there is no firm historical evidence that Vlad Dracula actually lived here.

The birthplace of Vlad Dracula in 1431 is now a restaurant. It is at Sighisoara, Europe’s best preserved Medieval city.
