Who should visit Jordan?

If we were drawing up a short list of places to see before you die, Petra would be at or near the top. It is truly one of the worlds great experiences.

Jordan is often combined with Syria and Lebanon on a single (and sometimes hectic) visit. We think that visiting Syria as well is a rewarding experience, especially for those who have an interest in ancient, medieval or christian history, or who want to gain a better understanding of this fascinating part of the world.

Jordan is also of real interest to those with an interest in wildlife. If they have time to spare, you could also consider visiting the Jericho area, a few miles into Palestine.

Jordan has plenty to offer for those in search of adventure - camel riding, desert hiking or climbing.

Families with children

The Jordanians love children. Your children will receive an enormous amount of fuss from everyone they meet. For some children with enquiring minds, Jordan will be an unforgettable experience. But as with so much of the fertile crescent travelling between sites could be tiring, so arrange your itinerary accordingly.

Nightlife

Alcohol is legal (but not in great demand) and is available at hotels, restaurants and tourist sites. However Jordan is not the ideal destination if clubbing is your main interest.

Is it safe?

Your safety can’t be guaranteed anywhere. However we hope that you will keep a sense of proportion - Europeans still flock to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt despite outrages far more terrible in their scale than the tragic incident in Amman earlier this year.

Most Jordanians speak very good English, regularly see English language TV programmes and have a reasonable understanding of our way of life. As a result most Europeans feel comfortable in Jordan.

Many western visitors take coach tours to feel safer. They miss out on the great hospitality of the Jordanian people. We accept that many visitors will not want to travel totally independently, so would advise arranging trips by car organised by tourism companies that we can put you in touch with.

Crime levels are remarkably low in Jordan by European or American standards.
