Bucharest Novotel

After the Euro Hotel we felt like staying somewhere more civilised!

We spent the following night in Bucharests newest Hotel, the Novotel.

The design, a classical facade in front of a glass box, has been controversial.

The hotels location on Calea Victoriei is in the heart of the city centre.

The hotel is classified as 4 star - Accor justifiably describe it as 4 1/2 stars).

Rooms are typical of the chain - we like them. It was an unusually mild November and the room heating was a little too high, but apart from that we found the hotel to be excellent.

Opposite the Novotel is the landmark Continental Hotel. They’re obviously taking the competition seriously - they were closed for refurbishment.

The Euro Hotel is recommended in the three star category of many Bucharest city guides and on several websites, including hotel booking sites.

Euro Hotel is a common name, and we did wonder whether the hotel was under the same management as the excellant Euro Hotel at Timisoara in western Romania - not such luck!

When we arrived waving our internet confirmation, we were told that internet confirmation is impossible, but were booked in anyway. We later overheard a customer who believed that he was booked in for three nights being told that the third night was not available.

Our suite cost 78 Euro’s. That’s more expensive than the Ibis and three times the cost of some three star hotels that we know that date from the communist period.

The suit was on the top floor (up 4 or five flights of steps) with no lift. The room had no window, just a skylight. It also lacked toilet rolls and towels. It had a kettle and a few glasses, but no cups or cutlery. We asked about these things and were given a toilet roll. On a subsequent visit to reception we were handed some towels, although by that time we had already bought one from a nearby shop.

An argument was going on in a nearby room. Although this was not the hotels fault we were surprised that it had been allowed to continue when we arrived back from dinner in a local restaurant.

The following morning we woke up to the sound of another loud argument, this time between members of the hotel staff!

Breakfast was included in the price in the restaurant which becomes an internet café after 10am. We told the staff that we were going to eat and would be back afterwards to collect our things and check out.

The restaurant service was slow and  impolite, cutlery only being provided (eventually) on request. For some reason we were given three menus, although only one was valid.

After breakfast (at 10.30am) we found that the key card for our room no longer worked, although the cleaners had not yet entered. The staff initially responded by asking us to pay for additional time at the hotel before finally agreeing to let us back in!

Ibis has two excellent hotels in Bucharest

Ibis Romanian Parliament

Ibis Gara du Nord

On the way back to the airport we called in to see the Ibis Gara du Nord. We have directed people there because of it’s location close to Bucharest’s main railway station.

A two hour visit gave us the opportunity to carry out a full inspection and meet the staff. It is hardly necessary to describe the contrast with the Euro Hotel.

The Ibis has a 24 hour bar, restaurant and shops. However book early - it can be difficult to book at short notice.

Conclusions:

We are regular visitors to Bucharest and the main purpose of this visit was to attend an event and stay at the new upmarket Novotel.

However we like to stay at budget hotels - to save money, because we enjoy the uncertainty and to find value for our clients. Our experiences of budget hotels throughout eastern Europe has generally been good.

Although new hotels are constantly opening in Bucharest, there is still a shortage at all levels. The two Ibis hotels are often fully booked, especially on weekdays, which means that we are keen to find decent hotels at comparable prices. Our advice is to book early! If you can’t get in, we do know some hotels at a fraction of their prices, but their standards will reflect their lower price!
