Jordan and the West Bank are a major ‘bottleneck’ route for migratory birds and offer a range of opportunities for the wildlife enthusiast.

Over 500 million birds cross the region every year and are naturally attracted to the lush green oasis areas like Azreq and Jericho.

Jordan wildlife 2

In the Holy Land (an area about the size of Wales) over 470 bird species have been recorded. That’s more than the whole of the UK, while in the whole of the United States about 725 species have been seen.

Awareness of the areas wildlife heritage has increased considerably over the years, There are now a number of conservation projects. For example:-

At Shawmari, Jordan (close to the bird watching area at Azreq) is a captive breeding programme for the Arabian Oryx, Ostriches, Onagers and Desert Gazelles.

In a woodland reserve at Ajloun, the Roe Deer has been reintroduced.
